Radiohead, an English rock band formed in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, in 1985, has been at the forefront of alternative rock and experimental music for decades. Initially called 'On a Friday', the band members met while attending Abingdon School, eventually renaming themselves Radiohead after the Talking Heads song 'Radio Head'. The lineup consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano), brothers Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments) and Colin Greenwood (bass), Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals), and Philip Selway (drums, percussion). They signed with EMI in 1991, releasing their debut single 'Creep' in 1992. Despite initial mixed reactions, 'Creep' became a worldwide hit, propelling their debut album, 'Pablo Honey' (1993), to international fame. However, it was their subsequent albums, 'The Bends' (1995) and 'OK Computer' (1997), that cemented their reputation as pioneers of alternative rock, with the latter often hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time. Radiohead's sound evolved significantly with the release of 'Kid A' (2000) and 'Amnesiac' (2001), incorporating electronic music, classical music, jazz, and krautrock. This experimental approach continued with later albums such as 'In Rainbows' (2007), which was initially released as a digital download for which buyers could choose their price, a revolutionary approach at the time. Radiohead's work is marked by its exploration of existential dread, social alienation, and political commentary, wrapped in complex lyrics and expansive soundscapes. Despite their experimental shifts, they have maintained critical and commercial success, influencing countless artists across various genres. Radiohead's refusal to be pinned down to a single musical identity, along with their innovative use of technology in music production and distribution, has solidified their status as one of the most respected and influential bands of their generation.
