Al Green, born Albert Leornes Greene on April 13, 1946, in Forrest City, Arkansas, is a legendary figure in soul music, whose career has spanned over five decades. Green's journey into music began in his childhood, singing gospel in his father's quartet. His early foray into secular music was marked by the formation of Al Green & the Creations in the mid-1960s, which later became the Soul Mates, achieving modest success. However, it was his collaboration with producer Willie Mitchell and signing with Hi Records that catapulted Green to stardom in the early 1970s.
