Formed in 2005 in London, The xx are a British indie pop band known for their unique sound that blends minimalistic indie rock, dream pop, and electronic music. The original lineup consisted of Romy Madley Croft (guitar, vocals), Oliver Sim (bass, vocals), Jamie Smith (also known as Jamie xx, beats, MPC, record production), and Baria Qureshi (keyboard, guitar), with Qureshi leaving the band in 2009. The xx gained immediate acclaim with their debut album, 'xx,' released in 2009. Characterized by its sparse arrangements, echoing guitar lines, and the distinctive vocal interplay between Croft and Sim, the album was a critical and commercial success, winning the Mercury Prize in 2010. Their follow-up albums, 'Coexist' (2012) and 'I See You' (2017), saw the band expanding their sound palette, incorporating more electronic and pop elements, and achieving further critical and commercial success. The xx are noted for their evocative, atmospheric music and introspective lyrics, making them one of the most influential and distinctive bands of their generation.
